    Karen Breen-Reid is Manager, Interprofessional Education with the Learning Institute at The Hospital for Sick Children. Karen obtained her BScN and Master of Nursing from the University of Toronto and Curriculum Development and Instructional Design Certificate from Mount Royal University, Alberta. Karen has held positions of staff nurse, educator, and manager in many areas throughout SickKids. She has designed and delivered education programs for SickKids nurses and interprofessional staff, as well as community partner education programs for over 30 years. She has over 40 years of experience in paediatric nursing; in a broad range of specialties and education expertise in creative curriculum development, instructional design, leadership, mentorship and collaborative communication. She has authored and co-authored peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, clinical standards, competencies and policies related to interprofessional practice, education and care of children with complex medical needs. She has been involved in designing and delivering several international education programs in collaboration with partners in Qatar, Ghana, Ethiopia, South Africa and the Caribbean. She participated in leading development of the first Canadian Paediatric Nursing Standards and the first paediatric certification exam with CNA. Karen has appointment as adjunct lecturer at the University of Toronto, teaching in the undergraduate and continuing education programs and mentored many undergraduate and graduate nursing students. She was a part-time lecturer at the University of Ghana and a member of the Discipline Committee of the College of Nurses of Ontario. She is a three time recipient of the SickKids Award for Nursing Excellence (nursing education; team, individual, and career achievement) as well as the 2008 Leadership Award in Nursing Education (Staff Development), from the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario.
